Backpacking

My best travel experience
I signed up to go on a study trip to Cannes, which is what inspired my move to France. While in Cannes, not only did I explore the city, but the areas around it. Afterwards, two friends from Cannes and I backpacked for five weeks around Europe. Those were five of the most intense and fun months of my life.
My 3 most important things for a perfect trip
1. My trusty backpack. It unzips in all the right places to cram in all of my stuff, but it feels surprisingly light when trekking around unknown cities. 2. My digital camera. It's an easy point-and-shoot that's been with me since my first backpacking trip in 2005. It's a little worse for the wear, but I love it. 3. A pen and notebook. I write down everything I see, from names of bars to songs I hear and love to contact information for friends I meet along the way.
How Travel changed my life
How has travel not changed my life? I am bilingual because of travel. I am a writer because of travel. I met my best friends and my boyfriend because I left the little niche that was my home and explored the world around me. I can't imagine who I would be if I had never left New York at 14 to go to France for three months on foreign exchange. I took this first step then, and I've never looked back.
