Thanks Chicago, I may wait for another ten years for my first trip to the moon. Till then, Alder Planetarium, Chicago shall be my own commercial shuttle for exploring the outer space in a convenient fashion. I had to wait till my visit here to understand why the Alder is the most popular attraction and the Sky Theatre projected me directly onto the magnificent space dome for a long trip into the cosmos. Definitely, the makers of this wonder zone had some potent star power and that continues to dazzle even after all these years.
It took me some time to reach the other end of the Solidarity Drive at the eastern side of the Museum Campus, a majestically laid out building oozing with the cosmic mysteries. Three floors and innumerable exhibits teach descriptively about planets. I took interest in examining the 4-billion-year-old rock from the Moon, but only till I confronted the ideas about the changing Universe. I wished my science teacher to be here; he must know how interesting education can be. The best collection of antique telescopes is to be found here as well, together with sundials and other astronomical instruments.
The Adler can really boast about being the only museum worldwide with two full-fledged planetarium theaters inside; while the StarRider Theater is powered by the cutting-edge Digistar 3 simulator technology, the historic Sky Theater uses a Zeiss Planetarium Projector to simulate the movements of the heavenly bodies. But nevertheless, I found both to be delivering an outer space environment at its finest. I was more for facts, so the guy at the counter suggested me the Audio Tour for $4, and it was helpful for exploring the exhibits and collections to the max. And if you are in for totality, a visit to the sundial workshop dating to the 15th century shall send you swirling to the sphere where dimensions melt…
