Of the two places I would recommend the most to travelers visiting Chicago, Illinois, one would be the downtown farmer’s markets, and the other would be the Lakefront and Navy Pier. Chicago is located next to Lake Michigan, which isn’t known as one of the Great Lakes for nothing. Upon arriving at the Lakefront, I could have been on either coast, looking at the ocean. Past the docks, and covered with boats sailing around the harbor, it was hard to believe that this was a lake I was seeing. The Navy Pier is located on the east side of the city, and offers the best views, the best food, and the best shopping for visitors to the city. Walking inside with some fellow travelers, I loved the semi-covered shopping entrance, with its carts and stores, that lead out to the lake-side pier. I thought that it was a brilliant move to include everything from a full shopping center and movie theater to a boat house in the same location, as it gave me a taste of Chicago in the two days I’d be spending there that I wouldn’t have had otherwise. Throughout the year, special events are held at the Pier, from children’s performances to art fairs. The first time I visited, there was a giant mini-golf course built with modern art installed within the main shopping complex, and the next time I visited there was a flea market of sorts located by the river. Other than offering a marvelous view of the water, the Navy Pier is also covered in both Chicago-based fast food and privately owned restaurants that feature lake-side seating. While I didn’t actually rent a boat that day, it was a possibility that I would take up in the future. Everyone from families having a weekend boat trip, to local fishermen frequent the Pier, making it a friendly place to find out more about greater Chicago, especially from store managers of surrounding trinket shops. While there are definitely a lot of tourists roaming around, Chicago is covered with tourism year round, and if you ignore the hype and enjoy the day by the gargantuan lake, Navy Pier is a fun, relaxing place to be.
