Basilica Del Sto Nino, in the downtown area of Cebu, is the oldest church in the Philippines. The beautifully painted ceilings and decorations behind the altar are well worth seeing. You can easily spend 2 to 3 hours looking around the basilica complex.

Whatever time of day you go, you’ll see a line of people queuing to the left of the altar to bless the replica image of Santo Nino. The original statue adorned with gold and precious stones dates back to 1521 and was given to the then Queen Juana by Magellan. The church also houses a souvenir shop where you can buy your Sto. Nino replica.

On the basilica complex you’ll also find the Santo Nino museum where you can see several religious artifacts and learn more about the Santo Nino story. At a very modest 10 pesos entrance fee for adults it’s a good way to pass an hour of your time.

For those of you who want to attend mass the church has both Cebuano and English services. The English masses are held at 8:00 am and 5:30 pm Monday to Saturday but excluding Friday. On Friday you have the choice of 7:00 am, 8:00 am, 9:00 am, 12:00 noon, 5:30 pm, 6:30 pm and 7:30 pm. Sunday masses in English are held at 8:30 am, 11:30 am, 5:30 pm and 7:00 pm. If you’re attending a mass there’s many TV monitors around the church so that you can follow the service.

There’s a small adoration chapel for your private prayer and an area to the left of the main church entrance for lighting candles.

A word of warning:- keep a tight hold of your belongings. The place gets absolutely packed and snatchers abound. If possible keep valuables in your front pockets.
