Student life was at one point very tough in Heidelberg. Before the 1900s, Heidelberg had even been using a student jail. When students would be too drunk or disorderly, they were simply sent to this student jail. The jail even has an entrance that leads right into the University so that students could still attend there classes.

It is still possible to see all of the old graphite left by students who had been imprisoned here. I was astonished to learn that sometimes students would even be held here for more than a couple but actually a couple weeks before they would be let go. For many students this was probably a way to show that they were tough and it allowed them to gain popularity or bragging rites.

When buying a ticket to gain entrance. Simply buy a combined ticket. For one free you will be able to get entrance to the museum, the old assembly hall and the old prison. All three are definitely worth visiting in order to get a better look into how student life really was in Heidelberg in the past.

The prison is located right around the corner from the old University.
