This is a vast, much extended hotel which, at one stage, may well have been picturesque. It isn't any more. However, while the twin room we had was unprepossessing, it was clean and warm and the receptionist was friendly and helpful.
Before I say anything else, I'd like to point out I was at this hotel in April, which is very much 'off' season for Norway. However, I really don't think that's an excuse for advertising one thing and providing quite another. We were very much looking forwarf the award-winning buffet banquet the hotel boasts, including home-cured meat, salted lamb-ribs and sausages. We were told 8pm by the receptionist, so at 8.02, hungry after a walk up a mountain, we were there!
Empty restaurant.
A rather puzzled head waiter dashed up the stairs, leant on his reservation lectern and asked if he could help. I said he could, because we really wanted to eat.
"Give me two minutes to set up a table," he chuntered.
No sign of a buffet. No sign of preperation. No sign, in fact, of anything at all. Ten minutes of standing around followed, until I eventually asked if we could sit down as our walk had made us quite tired. The receptionist, also acting as waitress, said of course we could and we were taken to our table.
There was no menu. In fact, it seemed very much as if nobody had been expecting us at all, despite our booking having been placed well in advance and there not being any option but to eat at the hotel! We were fed smoked salmon - what a treat for two girls from Scotland (!) - beef with traditional Norwegian potatoes, and home made ice cream.
The salmon was good - almost as good as home - but the beef was thin and tough, albeit flavourful. The potatoes, mashed with artichokes, were excellent. We forewent ice cream in favour of coffee upstairs in the bar, and were allowed to play cards and while away a couple of hours unmolested. In the end, it was a pleasant enough evening, but deeply disappointing considering the feast we'd been expecting.
I imagine the Fretheim serves wonderful cuisine during the tourist months, but it turns out that off-season in Flåm is pretty grim!
