Go on the shores of Lough Leanne to see the 15th century Ross Castle. It once belonged to the O’Donoghues Mór but during the Desmond armed revolt the English forces co-ordinated by Ludlow attacked the castle from the water and captured it. Nowadays you can pay €3.80 admission fee to visit it from the inside. In doing so don’t skip the “murder hole” and the banquet room and please wear warm clothes while inside. Charming is not only the castle but also the surroundings: there is a lovely beach with boats for rent and a picnic area. Especially in spring it is very pleasant to stay on the shores and the grass has a fantastic green color.
