Travel Tip: Galway Cathedral

5 stars
Published on Jan 29, 2008 by cosmoclaudio for The Galway Cathedral

It is officially called The Catholic Cathedral of Our Lady Assumed into Heaven and St Nicholas. To reach it I had to cross the Salmon Weir Bridge which led me over the river Corrib. The Cathedral was built in 1965 on the site of a former prison, very renowned for its brutal treatment of prisoners. The Galway Cathedral is very beautiful from the outside as it is from the inside. It was built in the Hiberno-Romanesque style with Irish mode influences. On the inside I was also strongly impressed by the remarcable stone-cut and wood carvings. The paintings were also well made.
