Crazy holidays in Mainz, how to prepare if you want to participate

1. Chapter: Carnival overview.

Published on Jan 29, 2008 by annatravel for Mainz

Carnival in Mainz is a very big holiday. People from those in baby cars to the oldest locals are actively participating in parade and the rest of carnival activities. They all dress up, paint faces and go to the main street to catch the candy from moving platforms.
I had an impression that everyone starts to drink in the morning and by the late evening the whole city is dizzy and dancing on the square in the empty Carnival fountain. If you don't like mass events and big screaming crowds, you definitely think of the other days to visit the city. All the shops are normally closed, as well as museums and other attractions.

Such a great carnaval, probably one of the best if not, The best carnaval in germany. Good atmosphere, and no problem if your are a foreigner and you don't speak a word of german.. I can say only "ich bin ein a berliner" And I manage to make friendship with this single sentence ( With the help of couple of beer of course..).

2. Chapter: Carnival preparations

Published on Jan 29, 2008 by annatravel for Mainz Carnival

If you really want to experience the total fun of Carnival, then may be the following tips generated from my previous experience of participation can help you to get ready to party:
1. Find a costume. Everyone wheres at least something, so you will look dull without at least a mask. If you didn't prepare in advance, then you can check some small stores in the city center a day before the Carnival. Last time I found there lets of cowboy hats, bunny ears, witch outfits and so on.
2. Wear something warm. It is still February and parade lasts for some hours. Last time we stayed for a long time at one place and I got really cold in my thin jacket.
3. Get some drinks in your purse or backpack (depending on how much you are intending to consume). You can buy beer from the wagons next to the parade, but it would be not so comfortable to leave some good place and to go all the way with glasses through the crowd. Last time we've bought some small liquors in little bottles which were very comfortable to drink.
4. Come a little earlier to the parade street and get a good spot from where you will be able to see things later. There are too many people, so if you are with a child, there is a chance he won't me able to see the parade in the crowd, so try to get him to the first line.
5.Book a restaurant for the evening in advance if you want to have a dinner out on this day. Everything is full of people.
6. Book a table at the bar where you are going to continue your party day in the evening (for the same reason)

3. Chapter: Carnival Light

Published on Jan 29, 2008 by annatravel for Carnival in Wiesbaden

Last year Carnival in Wiesbaden was one day earlier then in Mainz. It was a good training, because in Wiesbaden it was much smaller. Although I liked it much more then the one in Mainz. It was not so crowded and we could see everything good not standing too close to other people. There was also the possibility to walk along the parade streets, which makes the parade watching much more interesting. I would say that this was a light version of Carnival for those who doesn't like crowd but is still curious in the experience.
