Hayne’s Point Provincial Park – Osoyoos BC

If you’re heading to the summer tourist town of Osoyoos in southern BC, a small stop of interest & beauty is definitely Hayne’s Point Provincial Park. This unique land formation juts way out into Osoyoos Lake. During the winter time, it is almost possible to walk across and they have trenched a small area deeper in the water for boats to get through.

Not only does Hayne’s Point lay claim to one of the most beautiful & tranquil campgrounds in all of Osoyoos, but it also has a protected wetlands reserve. If you love birds, this is the place to go. Red winged blackbirds call from every direction. Bald eagles sit in the tall trees near the lakes edge. Robins make their nests in the trees. Quail run through the underbrush. The whole area is alive with sound. It’s amazing.

Its just a small hike through the grass, and on some wooden boardwalks, with elevated view platforms to look over the reeds & wetlands. If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to see one of the resident beavers swimming out in the lagoon. Even if you don’t see the beaver, you will see where he has been. Several trees in this park have been lost to beaver activity & now many more are being wrapped with chicken wire around their trunk to prevent this.

Also beware of the local squirrels. Some of them have gotten quite used to humans due to the campers & picnickers that are there feeding them and even in the off-season, they will come right up to you, almost aggressively, expecting a hand-out.

This beautiful park also boasts some amazing flora that is also protected in the park. Plants like antelope brush, sage brush & rabbit brush. Several Russian olive trees, some large & gnarly Ponderosa Pines, wild rose bushes & grasses of all sorts.

In the late fall, after all the campers & tourists have left, the entrance is gated & is perfect place to come on foot or on bicycle, without worrying about trucks & campers. The fall colors are amazing for photos & the long flat road to the campground is a favourite of walkers & joggers alike.

Hayne’s Point is a great park to visit any time of the year!
