| Near to the village of Leitrim and situated on the slopes of Slieve Croob, this is probably one of Ireland’s most photographed dolmens (megalithic tomb) and dates from the Neolithic period. It’s approx 4,000 years old and is the portal grave of a Chieftain. There’s also archaeological evidence of a structured and organised society, as the heavy stones would have had to be dragged some distance before being set in place. In comparisons to other dolmens, the three supporting stones are unusually long; hence Legananny Dolmen has been described as “a coffin on stilts”. You have to see it up close to really appreciate its size but it’s another of those structures that just makes you think: how did they do that? |
