| GNP is a Heritage Ireland site and this thickly wooded valley was a lush, forest paradise with the lavish Glenveagh Castle estate at its centre. It's beautiful and pleasant now, but its history is darker. This was originally the home of the infamously cruel landlord John George Adair, who evicted scores of struggling tenant farmers in the freezing winter of 1861; apparently because their presence on his estate was ruining his view. If this tale is true, then it's a form of divine justice that his estate now belongs to all of the people of Ireland. In keeping with his reputation, Adair didn't donate the property to anybody. He sold it to the Philadelphia art historian Henry McIlhenny but then McIlhenny donated the land and house back to the Irish nation. I found the castle a fairy tale setting, whilst the woodlands, herds of red deer, alpine gardens, lakes and the highest mountain in Donegal, Mount Errigal, conveyed a sense of wilderness. Admission is free and there was also a visitor centre with a little shop and a charming tearoom in the castle. |
