Travel Blog: And you wouldn't want to visit because...?

Published on Jan 30, 2008 by mke_maddie

Milwaukee is prey to its own TV persona….land of beer, cheese and of course…sausage. And along these lines, people envision Milwaukee as chubby, drunk, and blue collar working-class. However, this is a façade. Yes the winters are cold, and yes there has been a spike in street crime, but beyond this Milwaukee is a city that offers so much more.

1. Chapter: Big City Excursions, Small Town Neighborhoods

Published on Jan 30, 2008 by mke_maddie for Milwaukee

Milwaukee is the largest city in the state of Wisconsin. Obviously this is considered a “large city” to any resident living in the state. However, comparable to true blue large cities like Los Angels and New York City, Milwaukee is tiny. But this isn’t what gives Milwaukee the “small town feel.” It’s the individual neighborhoods that create this feeling…Eastside, Riverwest, Bayview, Shorewood, downtown….each has a distinct characteristic and personality, yet combined, the areas make up a very diverse urban city that is lush and lively.

2. Chapter: Keeping you Busy

Published on Jan 30, 2008 by mke_maddie for Milwaukee

Day time activities or evening activities…you’ll find something that fits you. Choose from a list of scenes like the Art Museum, Milwaukee Public Museum, Discovery World Museum, the Botanical Gardens, County Zoo, Milwaukee Brewers game at Miller Park, Bucks game or Admirals hockey match at the Bradly Center, theatrical performances at the Marcus Center for the Performing Arts…you’re options are limitless.

Milwaukee’s night life is also something to regard. The city definitely has some great nightclubs, pubs and restaurants that will entertain you. You can find anything you’re looking for. Go downtown and hit up a night club, while in Riverwest try a tiki bar, and on the Eastside relax at a trendy pub. You can also catch a show at the Rave, Riverside, Pabst Theater, or BBC where there are always performances.

3. Chapter: Shopping, Shopping, Shopping

Published on Jan 30, 2008 by mke_maddie for Milwaukee

Milwaukee has a lot to offer in terms of shopping. The downtown area offers a great selection of trendy boutiques and art venues. On the Eastside there are a host of specialty vintage stores as well as fashion-forward shops that offer top brand names. Bayview has a great assortment of antique shops and music stores. There are also large shopping centers such as Mayfair Mall on Highway 100 or Bayshore Mall (indoor/outdoor mall) off of Port Washington Rd.

4. Chapter: Snow, Sun, Showers?

Published on Jan 30, 2008 by mke_maddie for Milwaukee

The best months to visit Milwaukee throughout the year are June and July, although I would suggest anytime beginning of April to beginning of August. You’ll find the most outdoor activities going on during this time. Plus, Milwaukeeans are so excited about being outside and in warm weather---putting everyone in their most outgoing and happy moods. The winters can get fiercely cold (January being the worst month for this), but playing in the snow or ice skating downtown can be a lot of fun.

You also want to keep in mind the Holidays that take place throughout the month of December. Stores are usually always open, but hours do change during this month.

5. Chapter: No Need to Dig Deep into those Pocket Books

Published on Jan 30, 2008 by mke_maddie for Milwaukee

The cost of living in Milwaukee is relatively manageable, especially comparing it to other cities like Chicago and New York. However, costs are going up, and the job market doesn’t seem to be doing so well around here lately. The Eastside is, besides the trendiest, the most expensive as well. The lowest one bedroom apartment you can currently find is about $500 a month…and you’re not getting a whole lot. The new “Eastside” is Bayview. Their trendy status is currently rising and you can find cheaper housing.

As a whole the city and the prices within it, whether it be a hotel or dinner, is decently priced and you will find a good spendable cost of living here.
