Travel Tip: St. John the Baptist Church

5 stars
Published on Jan 31, 2008 by Elizaoprisor for Yaroslavl'

St. John the Baptist Church is the masterpiece of the Yaroslavl school of architecture. It is perhaps the coziest church I found in the entire Russia. Its walls and dome drums are covered with glazed tiles. The temple has its fifteen domes assembled in groups. The entire interior is covered with frescos depicting Christian saints, St. John the Baptist and biblical topics. For me it was like reading a book without words. The Bell Tower was built after the church was finished. Once again I encountered particular architecture proper to all Russian Cathedrals and Churches.
