Travel Tip: Terraces

5 stars
Published on Jan 31, 2008 by cosmoclaudio for Machupicchu

Machu Picchu was divided into two great halves: the urban sector and the agricultural sector. Both parts are showing amazing effort to civilize and domesticate the mountain. The terraces where used 5 centuries ago for two main purposes, to cultivate the harvest and to prevent erosion of the ground. My guide book read it would have been impossible to cherish the all inhabitants of the sacred city only on account of these terraces. Maybe they where used only to cultivate crops for ceremonial food or maybe there are things undiscovered yet. Who knows what the Inca story will look like a few years after.
