Travel Tip: Misleading Signs In Wellington

Published on Jan 31, 2008 by Timsaunders for Wellington

Here's a warning for people who have just got off a plane in Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand, and jumped in their hire car. As you leave the airport, huge signs direct you to the "Classic New Zealand Wine Trail". It sounds like fun, and I'm sure it is, but the signs themselves are misleading. They direct people to drive around the city in a seemingly random sort of way, certainly not on a direct route. But as you drive around the streets, you will not see any vineyards or wineries.
The signs are part of a new initiative to set up a 380 kilometre wine trail through the main wine producing districts in the country - Marlborough, Tararua, Hawkes Bay, and Wairarapa. After taking you on a sightseeing drive around the city, the signs eventually lead you out of town and to the first vineyards - over an hour away.
The trail itself is a good idea, and New Zealand wines are superb... I just wish they make the fact that there are no wineries around Wellington clearer on the signs!
