On my first backpacking trip to Europe I found a delightful spa nestled in the small town of Aachen, Germany, near the Netherlands-Germany border. I found Carolus Therman Bad Aachen (“bad” means “bath”) affordable at 10 euros for 2.5 hours, though there are charges for each additional activity. The entrance fee admits you into their enormous mineral pools, both outside and inside. Simply swimming in these pools is relaxing, and a couple times an hour they become whirlpools. This is especially fun in the outside pool, which turns into one big whirling circle that you can either swim against for exercise or float along for relaxation. It’s an amazing experience to do this with other surprised visitors, laughing and splashing. I also found Germans to be incredibly non-judgemental compared to North Americans; I felt very comfortable in my one-piece swimsuit despite my non-perfect body. I also indulged in a massage and a 30-minute relaxation room that mimicked the light of day and night. I highly recommend that visitors check out European spas (very different from North American “spas”), and I can personally vouch for the quality of Carolus Therman Bad Aachen.
