As a museum buff, one of my favorite outings in Ankara was the excursion to the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations just a few blocks from the historic shopping center. Located mid-way up the hill to the old castle, the museum is easy to find and a taxi ride from the Sheraton Hotel was very inexpensive (approximately $5.00). As you make your way to the entrance, you’ll be greeted by locals offering to translate or act as a guide to interpret the exhibits for a fee. While this may be a nice touch, exhibits are fairly self explanatory and you can purchase various language guides inside. I was particularly amazed with the outdoor garden with displays of large seed and water vessels from various Mesopotamian periods. Inside the museum are wonderfully placed exhibits from before 6,000 BC to the present period. There are full slabs that have been relocated to the museum showing hieroglyphic writings and figures. Check with the museum before going as you may be able to sit in on a guest lecture!
