Travel Tip: CAMPING AT TANJUNG SEMPANG MENGAYAU

I love Tanjung Sempang Mengayau (the Cape of the Wandering Junction), the northern-most tip of Borneo, in Kudat, Sabah, Malaysian state in Borneo. I went there in March 2007 during a day trip.

There are no boarding facilities provided as the tourism authority wants to maintain its pristine condition. However, you can camp at the beach. The beach is quite long, some 10 minutes (!) of driving before you reach the long esplanade. The esplanade leads you to the surfaced reef, the actual tip of Borneo.

The beach is so sandy and white! Wow! If you camp there and you need to answer nature call, you’ll be ashamed to do it on the pure white sand. Campers would do it in the bushes up from the beach - never on the sands.

If you are camping, make sure you have everything you need before going to TSM because the place is basic. Buy your stuffs in the Kudat Town, one hour away from TSM by car. If you are camping for three days, buy enough food for four days.

There is an army post between the white sandy beaches and the esplanade. There is also a beach volleyball field at the post. The soldiers on the post would love to play against some camping tourists.
