1. Chapter: Arrival |
Airport in Varadero is really smaller. Even smaller is its arrivals hall. Our airplane has landed at about 1am because of the long delay in Munich. There are no busses or mobile corridors: we left the plane and had to walk all the way to the airport building, although the distance is not significant. The hall where people are waiting in line for the passport and customs control is really small and you can’t buy even some water from the vending machine. Lines were really long, because there were two huge airplanes landing almost at the same time. Passport control officers were asking lots of strange questions, like for example what is my profession and where do I work at the moment (I wonder what would happen if they don’t like somebody’s occupation, then would they send the person back?). After the border there is also nothing. So if you are hungry or thirsty you have to wait all the way until you will come to the hotel, because it is actually situated in the middle of nowhere and there is nothing civilized around for miles. 2. Chapter: Departure |
The departure lounge of the Varadero airport is also very small. We were going through the customs control, which is at the same time the last control before the airplane and we were very surprised that Cuban officers don’t care about liquids-in-the-luggage rule at all. We had a bottle of coke which was opened, but they said that it is no problem. So they are not strict at all, the restrictions from the rest of the world don’t seem to bother them at all, although the airlines are relying on their services. May be this is not so good for the safety, but I felt so relieved and happy in comparing with all the stressful checks of the luggage in Europe. Duty free shop is tiny and the choice of goods is quite limited. There are some basic souvenirs in case you forgot to get some before. Waiting areas are also small and there is nothing to do their at all, especially late in the evening when no food is sold. I would advice to come as late as possible (I mean don’t miss you flight, please!), not to wonder around in those square meters of the departure hall.
