When hospitality business becomes more and more competitive in the region then local hoteliers need to distinguish themselves on the market. For example my grand mother being able to afford to stay at the best hotels is choosing the accommodation not only by basic criteria and personal preferences but also by environmental and social engagement of the business, in order to support ecologically and community friendly activities. Last time when she was asking me to book a hotel in Saint-Petersburg, I found out that Grand Hotel Europe, which is one of the top hotels in city, is one of the only two companies who support Center for Youth of Social Risk (another one is IKEA). Every year they employ about 5 young people, train them for positions in different departments (like kitchen, laundry and housekeeping), give them work and later send the best of them (at least two people) to continue the education at the University. This way they take the socially responsible position in the community by helping troubled people to find their way and also contribute to the fight with young criminality. We have stayed at the hotel for 4 days and after a talk with the management met some of the previous orphans. They seemed to be trained very good and looked very enthusiastic. I think in some way they were providing a better service then the rest of the employees, being ready always to go extra mile with a smile for a guest.
