For most people coming to Costa Rica, San José is the starting point of their voyage - it has the country's only international airport (and international retail stores and food chains). However, I would not recommend an extended stay here. The city is, very unlike the rest of the country loud, chaotic, hectic and polluted and - let's face it - not particularly interesting. A funny little memory I have of the place is that of extraordinarily high curbstones that make it difficult to cross the street for walkers...
