Gander is not top of most people’s list of places to visit in Newfoundland but if you’ve an interest in aviation history then the airport is worth a quick stop as it was the jumping off point for several historic trans-Atlantic flights and once the world’s largest airport thanks to its prime location for refuelling flights from Europe. It continues to play the same role today but mainly for cargo aircraft. There is an interesting display of models of historic aircraft in the main terminal foyer representing particularly famous machines and those associated with Gander but there’s little else to make a detour worthwhile. If you’re travelling on a cross island bus from Port aux Basques to Saint John’s then you will probably have a toilet break at Gander long enough to browse the display cases.
