Travel Tip: Visiting Tioman Island

5 stars
Published on Jul 29, 2007 by AndreaLJC for Pahang

Tioman Island is a really lovely place to visit, one of my favorites in fact. mainly because of the people, they are so friendly and even remember me when I returned to the island some 7 months later!  I stayed in ABC  but did visit a few of the other town but definitely preferred ABC.  The beach is a bit rocky but you can snorkel and see Turtles and some beautiful fish, if you want a sandy beach you can take a 10 minute walk through the woods to a small bay with a bar/hotel on it.  It is always fairly deserted and its a really nice little walk - I saw some strange creatures in the woods, a monitor Lizard (about 2 metres long!) and an ant the size of a golf ball!  Make sure you come back before dark as it was a bit of a difficult walk during day light, let along doing it whilst holding a torch!  There are some lovely places to eat with a lot of choice, a bookshop and a great place where you can paint your own sarongs!  I had a go and it turned out brilliant, but now I didn't want to ruin it so haven't actually used it!  Nightlife is fairly quiet but you meet a lot of people on the island, both locals and travelers so there are always loads of people to chat to which is lovely.  There is also a lot of wildlife on the island, I saw a Flying Fox and a Mouse Deer but there are Porcupines too and a lot of Monitor Lizards (My Mum freaked out as she thought it was a crocodile!)
