Travel Tip: Carnival Capital

4 stars
Published on Feb 10, 2008 by NoraBuzz for Cajamarca

Carnival in Cajamarca is absolute craziness and if you are up for it, you should come - but be prepared to get soaked. The main days of carnival take place the days before Ash Wed., or the beginning of Feb. The first day of carnival is spent throwing water balloons and paint at each other. During to the night, at least 20 to 30 bands gather in the central plaza and play carnival music. There is lots of drinking and dancing until the wee hours of the morning. On both Sunday and Monday there are parades full of extravagant costumes. The parades go on all afternoon, and so do the water balloons. I recommend buying a piece of plastic to put over your body to try and stay dry. Throughout the weekend, you will be invited to participate in drinking "chicha" and dancing carnival - so if you come bring lots of energy!

Good tip. Bet you could make some money selling those cheap little disposable plastic rain ponchos. Great photos too.
