I don’t go 10 pin bowling often. I tend to bowl gutter balls and break fingernails, forget to let go of the ball and generally embarrass myself. However, there are times – usually Christmas and birthday parties – where bowling is a necessity. One of those occasions occurred last Friday night, when a group of us ended up celebrating a friend's birthday at Queens Ice Rink and Bowl.
Before the games began, I managed to check out the ice rink. I’m told it’s small for an indoor rink, but at 6.15pm on a Friday night, it was much less crowded than any of the outdoor rinks I’ve seen this winter. Some of the skaters looked a lot more professional as well, skating backwards, jumping and twisting.
There’s also an amusement arcade with all the usual games – where I challenged a friend to a Daytona USA race (£1 each per credit) and lost – and a bar with black leather couches. We didn’t eat at Queens, but I did notice that they also had an area where you could order food, mainly of the pizza and sides variety.
The 10 pin bowling alley worked slightly differently than I others I’ve visited. Hiring a lane meant hiring it for an hour (rather than a game), and with 10 people per lane, we had to make sure there weren’t many delays between turns to keep within that time. Another difference was that we didn’t have to hire the standard blue and red bowling shoes (although they were available if you wanted them). So I ended up bowling in my knee-high boots (which may have been partly to blame for my low score of 45).
Our hour of bowling cost £5.00 each. Cheap entertainment, and not too crowded. If you're wanting a generic bowling alley, I'd recommend this venue.
