Travel Tip: Costa Rica's hightest mountain

5 stars
Published on Feb 12, 2008 by anja78 for Chirripó

Climbing the Cerro Chirripó, with 3,819 meters the highest mountain in Costa Rica, was one of hardest and most rewarding experiences in my life. If the weather is good, you can see both the Pacific Ocean and the caribbean from the top. The 16 km ascent is not particularly hard, but I found it was extremely difficult because of the high altitude. So an early start might be recommended. Get your National Park Pass and hostel reservation (there is a hostel close to the summit and although it is possbile to go up and down in the same day if you're really fit, I would not recommend it) the day before, as the National Park office doesn't open until eight o'clock.
