It was my first chance to witness a carnival in my whole life and first chance to see how really it is done and how it is showcased. So I went to witness this carnival in the old city of Castrovillari. There were more than twenty groups participating and we were included in a very thick crowd along via II Settembre (September 20 street) who triy our luck to have a good view of the events and the performance of the participants Naturally, it was weird for me to see oxen, tractors and other farm materials in the street that time. But eventually, I have adjusted my mind and thoughts when I was told that carnivals are celebrated to depict people getting a bit mad/crazy before the lenten season because during the lent the do not/cannot eat meat. It was my first time to experienced one because what I had in my country were all festivals (mostly religious and produce related) and they have been so organized. Maybe this is the reason why I am a bit disappointed to witness the carnival which is for me without "order". Non-participants and anyone just kept on crossing the street, prticipants going out of their group, participants talking to their friends in the crowd and left behind by their groupmates, etcetera. But I keep on telling myself that "people are supposed to be out of their minds" so it might be the reason for the disorganization and what they are doing might have been the "natural" acts.. Participants came from other countries like Albania and Brazil among others. The last group were the Brazilians and the crowd really got excited and had so much fun with the group's sexy outfit and artistic masks. Many in the crowd requested some Brazilin participants to have photos with them or to have their group as photo background and the latter obligued eagerly. Overall, the event was a success and it was also my first time to see so much confetti thrown to participants by the crowd and vice versa. Hi Adam! if you are a foll culture lover, it's worth a try. However, as i have said, it not so much fun as I have expected. There is nothing so special about it, as I have rated the experience with 3 stars only...
Sounds like fun. We have our St Patrick's parade here on Monday which is slightly more serious (but only slightly)
What an amusing article! This type of festival creeps me out. As what you've said, there are many OUT OF THEIR MINDS people. And I don't like costumes. This appealing review makes me want to see one!
Sounds interesting...would you recommend this festival to traveler's?
