This is the theme of the Cocoa Tree website, and this is exactly what one experiences in this gem of a cafe. Sophie herself is nearly always on the premises, working her magic in the kitchen and offering expert advice on the selection of chocolates offered in the shop.
The front of the shop is designed as a traditional European chocolatiere, specializing in Belgian chocolates (the Earl Gray is my personal favourite!) but rapidly expanding into various kinds of organic, fairtrade, and even Russian chocolates, all with at least 70% cocoa solids which, as Sophie herself will tell you, is the minimum standard for quality chocolate. Choice will definitely be difficult, and I recommend being guided by Sophie's own expert opinion, or that of one of her well-informed staff members.
As you pass through to the seating area, you enter a deliciously welcoming atmosphere, complete with wood-burning stove and leather couch for those cold Scottish days, and a little hidden garden for when the weather is fine. Mismatched wooden tables and chairs lend a homey air to the space, and the sympathetically renovated eighteenth-century building provides excellent atmosphere for conversation or for a quiet afternoon with a good novel.
Beyond the delights of the chocolate shop, the cafe offers a wonderful menu of hot drinks, including white, milk, or dark hot chocolates, and Caliente, which is a small cup of smooth dark chocolate with a hint of chili powder. There are also teas and milkshakes on offer, along with scones, crepes, and an unbelievably decadent chocolate cake. Homemade soup is also an option, as are a selection of paninis made with fresh ingredients from the Little Italian Shop in nearby St. Andrews. Prices range from £2-£6, and the quality of the food will not disappoint.
Whether you're looking for a pleasant afternoon hangout or a delicious lunch, or even for chocolatey gifts to carry away with you, you can't beat the Cocoa Tree for quality and atmosphere in Pittenweem. Visit once, and you'll feel just like an old friend.
