Travel Tip: Sahara Dunes of Erg Chebbi

5 stars
Published on Mar 11, 2008 by Sinbad the sailor for Dunes of Erg Chebbi

After crossing the Atlas Mountains and heading further south, one reaches the beautiful dunes of Erg Chebbi, in the western part of the Sahara Desert. This is without doubt one of the most beautiful landscapes of Morocco – with the Algerian border at sight just 40 Km away. Great place to ride camels and try the famous Berber tea.

One can sleep in the hostels around the village of Merzouga – Erfoud being the nearest city. The night sky is amazingly clear there and you will be called Ali Baba, if you have a beard, that being the meaning in Berber language. The dunes are orange in some parts, in others pink, yellow, brown or even darker. The silence is nice.
