My colleague, Ali, whose family owns a bar around St. Denis one time, said, in a way or two I am a dangerous customer as I write reviews, but you know, I don’t always write bad reviews, in fact, most of the times I write good reviews of dining places that I have been to; but yes, it is almost impossible that I will never encounter a bad dining place while trying the new dining places; I’d like to share my experiences, although I am not a professional critic; and I write, as what I experienced it.

The latest restaurant that I went to and sadly it has to go to the list of “try at your own risk” is a Japanese restaurant located in Mont Royal Est, called Wakamono (Sushi). I was so eager to dine here but in the end it was a disappointment. Because of watching Food Safari (Japanese foods edition), a TV series from Australia, I became intimidated to find a Japanese restaurant in Montreal that offers ramen, noodle soup. After searching on the net, we found a couple of restaurants with reviews; one has too many bad reviews, while the other one (Wakamono) was mentioned a couple of times here and there; checking the website of Wakamono made me really wanted to go there and try their ramen.

This restaurant requires reservation, although public parking is available, it was somewhat hard to find an empty spot the night we went there, so please take a note down for those who are driving. As you enter the restaurant, you will right away see the liquors bar on your right side, and further is what I believe their kitchen; it took us quite awhile to wait to be seated although the bar person saw us, the kitchen personnel also saw us, but I believe since it wasn’t their job, they didn’t do nothing nor greet us; we had to ask the bartender whether we were gonna be seated or we can go ourselves to any table and she just told us to wait.

On your left side is the dining area; we took a peep, there was the sushi bar with 3 personnel there but again, none of them were greeting us or whatever; the dining area were not too occupied and as finally the waitress came, it was kind of funny as we mentioned our name and reservation, she just seat us to any empty table and that’s about it; so another note, nothing really special about the reservation thingy, not a card of “reserved” displayed on the table or something usual that I would find at any other restaurants that also require reservation, if you get what I mean.

Once we were ready with what we were gonna orders, the waitress asked whether we want “udon” or “ramen” for the type of the noodle and also whether we want “miso” or “soya (or what is shoyu? I don’t know!)” for the soup, without explanation or suggestion what is what, which is a shame. I ordered as shown in the picture, which is soya ramen with chicken and shrimps; the chicken was tasteless, the only taste I could find for the whole bowl was the too strong MSG-like taste which came from the soya soup; I hate to say it, but it was horrible to the tongue and more over, they didn’t refill our water whatsoever. Another thing to take note is that whatever they had listed on their website, they are different to what they listed on their actual menu; so it was a bit confusing to me; for example, on my order they put char su which later on I learned it was pork, this isn’t listed on their website; kind of tricky, and do watch out for those who don’t consume pork.

The moment I (had to) finished my meal (it was a not so much portion for 12 CAD! Compare to Vietnamese Pho, Wakamono’s ramen cannot hold a candle whatsoever!), I started to have a stomachache and the feeling to throw up, and funnily, my husband had as well; so for overall, really, I won’t suggest this restaurant…. or perhaps, it was another our unlucky day.

Wakamono is not a place I recommend anymore. It has ok sushi, but on many occasions the maki rolls have been so loosely rolled, they fall apart when picked up. I put up with this because they have a special on take out from 5-7PM, but I will no longer do so. On the last occasion I placed an order, I was presented a bill that was *considerably* higher than I expected. When I complained, I was told that that day (Feb 14th) was an excption to the rule. I stated that I should have been told this at the time I placed the order, but the manager/owner said no way, was quite rude, and walked away. This is a terrible way to treat the customers that keep you in business.
