Harrods It's a huge department store in Knightsbridge, London, owned by well-known Egyptian businessman Mohammed Al Fayed. The store occupies a four and a half acre site and has over one million square feet of selling space in over 330 departments selling luxury items. Harrods has more than 5,000 employees, there are 72 different nationalities working at Harrods .. This makes Harrods one of the largest department stores in the world, definitely the largest in the United Kingdom. At night, it lights up with 12,000 lightbulbs turning Harrods into a beacon of light, 300 lightbulbs need replacing each day. Harrods has something for everyone, clothes, food, chocolate, shoes you name it. It is rather expensive but its worth it! However, not all items are totally overpriced, if you just take the time to explore around. The food halls are impressive and have to be seen to be believed. Since the deaths of Princess Diana, and Mohamed Al-Fayed's son "Dodi Al-Fayed", two memorials funded by Al-Fayed have been erected inside Harrods to the couple. The first, on April 12, 1998, consists of photographs of the two behind a pyramid-shaped display that holds a wine glass still smudged with lipstick from Diana's last dinner as well as an engagement ring Dodi purchased the day before they died. The second memorial, in 2005 and located by the Egyptian escalator at door three, is titled "Innocent Victims", is a bronze statue of the two dancing on a beach beneath the wings of an albatross, the albatross is a bird which is said to symbolize the "Holy Spirit". Mr Al Fayed said he wanted to keep the pair's "spirit alive" through the statue. When I go there I always see lots of people looking at the memorials and signing the remembrance book for Princess Diana and Dodi Al Fayed. At Harrods Egyptian halls, I loved the pharaohs in the Egyptian Room, apparently they're modeled in Mohammed al-Fayed's likeness, unfortunately I wasn't`t aloud to take photos there. Visiting Harrods is a great experience I love the food halls as well as the grandiose Egyptian Staircase it is so amazing, everything about Harrods says class to me even the luxury washrooms. It has all the big names there like Giorgio Armani , Chanel, Christian Dior, Juicy Couture, Rock and Republic, Vera Wang, Dolce & Gabbana , Burberry London, etc. At the Arcade you will find lots and lots of affordable merchandise and souvenirs with the Harrods logo. Anyway, this place is huge so be prepared to get lost on your first time shopping at Harrods, the map will serve you well. Great place to pay a visit to, even though it is pricey, definitely worth a look! Tags for this Travel Tip: london knightsbridge harrods alfayed princessdiana dodialfayed memorials |

Excellent details..il be visiting Harrods
I have seen them on TV a number of times, next time I'm in the London area I'm SO there.
great and long comment. I´ll go to London in summer and then I ´ll check up :-)
Hi Fatima, really great pictures and informative tips! I love all of them :O))
Thanks for the thorough description of Harrods. Your excellent observations has certainly made me keen on going their one day
Good tip. Very detailed. The place could tire out even the most chronic shopaholic and window-shopaholic. Me? I'll just kill my time just as enjoyably by eating ice cream and watching the goings-on in such an interesting place.
was good, although i 've been there before but i enjoyed reading it
funny, we were talking about Harrods the other day in school hehehe
I agree Harrods is a must see when in London. I bought a gold charm there of a London phone booth, and thought the food court area was really nice too.
Great tip! I agree! I love stopping into Harrods to pick up some treats to take to a park or back to the hotel. From Scotch Eggs to chocolate truffles, it's a feast for the eyes and stomach!
oh is this an april fool´s tip or a real one ? LOL
ok i wanna be reasonable, if i will ever have a girlfriend or wife that has piles of cash growing on trees in the backyard i´m gonna take her to harrods that´s for sure ! until then i´ll leave the bling to the gangsta rappers, pimps and divas...thanks but no thanks...
wow.. thats quite a review... looking forward to your next review...:-)
I've been to Harrods a few years ago. It's really a wonderful place!!
Hi, well I think, once I was at Harrods - and I must confess that it is quite amazing, although I am not that consuming guy.
To tell the truth: for me it is always difficult - on the one hand the beauty of it, the huge amount of products and all - on the hand I don't really like luxurary things. So once - for a half fascinating and half critical look at it, it's worth visiting.
Interesting story Fatima... Actually the kind of travelling I like best IS shopping. I heard nice comments about Harrods in London all the time from friends who have been there, and your tip makes me want to go there more. Thanks a bunch!
I've heard of it so many times before, I really should put it on my list of things to do for next time. But it sounds like I should leave my credit card at home... ;-)
I will definitely have to return as there was so much I missed when I was there. I remember buying Harrods Teas and Almond Macaroons...to die for!!!
Only ever been in a couple of times and never really paid that much attention. I'll take another look now. Cheers.
Thanks! I've been there a few times, but didn't know many of the facts you write about. By the way, my favourite section at Harrods is the Christmas store, where you buy some inexpensive but very pretty decoration... that also makes great seasonal gifts for friends and family.
WoW, Great Tip Fatima, I usually proud to have important and rich Egyptian ( Like me) Buisness man in England, and of course when U say Harrods you will rember directly Diana & Doddy, God bless thier souls. Some English friends said to me that Harrods is Soooooooo Expensive store, tell me please one of the products which U love it in Harrods and it was expensive or Cheap??
I really liked this travel tip. You had included a lot of facts I didn't know about, for example the 72 nationalities. Very interesting. Beautiful pictures as well, especially the one of the ceiling.
