If you’re looking for museums in Berlin, your best starting point is Museumsinsel (Museums Island). Museumsinsel is the name for the northern half of Spreeinsel, which is an island in--you guessed it--the Spree river. Several of these buildings were destroyed in World War II, however most of the museums that make this island so famous have been (or are in the process of being) re-built.

The museums include the Old Museum (Altes Museum), the New Museum (Neues Museum), The Old National Gallery (Alte Nationalgalerie), the Bode Museum (formerly the Kaiser Friederich Museum), the James Simon Gallery, and--the most famous of them all--the Pergamonmuseum.

If you're not that into museums (and if that's the case, why are you in Europe?), Museumsinsel is still a great island to enjoy for its great views of the city, nice and artsy atmosphere, and that literally awesome feeling of being in a UNESCO World Heritage site.
