You cannot legally buy alcohol in Brunei. I did not find it much of a problem; actually, it was a bonus – the variety of non-alcoholic cocktails at the hotel bar was amazing and I could drink as many as I wanted without getting drunk. However, if you prefer to have alcohol on your holiday, remember to bring it with you. There is a generous duty free allowance for non-Muslims compared to most countries (please check the exact amounts at the time of travel, as these may change), but you will need to buy your spirits before departure; they don’t sell alcohol at Brunei airport. If you run out, you can head for the nearest border (depending on where you are staying, it can be as close as 20-30 min by car) and get some more.
