Travel Tip: Chile - El Caracol dangerous Andes' road

El Caracol is the famous dangerous road that connects Chile with Argentina across the Andes. Located on the Chilean side, it has 29 loop-like closed curves that in winter time often get impossible to drive across. This road stays immediately after the border Chile-Argentina, at Paso de los Libertadores. At about 3 Km of altitude and 160 Km from Santiago, the nearest city is probably Potrillo, a ski-resort.

You have to drive really carefully and be sure your breaks are fine – I had to change bus because of that! There are many tunnels along this road also due to the snowfall and little avalanches that can block drivers. In fact some times you will be stranded 2-3 days.

The view is magnificent!
