The BBC’s that one television producer that everyone I know knows about. Even from New Zealand, I watched their documentaries, their dramas, and ‘Doctor Who’. So not long after we arrived in London, we decided to take a tour of the famous BBC Television Centre which is located opposite the White City station on the Central Underground line.

Our guide met us at the reception, and in a group of about twelve, we were shepherded around the corridors of the BBC. It really is its own little world, with cafes and stores selling BBC products between the work areas. We got to see a very busy newsroom, and to peer down at several different studios. It was incredible to see how many lights there were in each studio, and what a difference they made to how the set appeared on television.

Then later, just before the end of the tour, we got to be in a show of our own – I was picked as one of three contestants participating in a mock game show. We were told to watch a scene from ‘The Catherine Tate’ show, and then asked questions about what we remembered. Second prize was a BBC pen. Other tour participants got to play the host, monitor the sound effects, or just watch from the studio audience.

I think you need to pre-book tickets, as there’s limited spots on each tour. We rang the number on the BBC website, and paid £19.00 for two adult tickets. That’s less the UK TV licensing fee, and for this media geek at least, it was money well spent and a fun way to spend an afternoon.
