The famous golden (actually made of bronze) statue at Rockefeller Center is of the ancient Greek god Prometheus. According to Greek mythology, Prometheus made man out of clay and gave him fire. The statue is by the ice rink and is hard to miss. Pose for an iconic NYC picture near the statue. The area will be crowded during nice weather with tourists (many tourists!) and locals. The grounds nearby are landscaped with flowers during the spring and summer. The statue itself is nearly 75 years old, weighs 12,500 pounds and is gilded in 24 karat gold. The best view of the statue is from across the rink or from the rink itself. Tags for this Travel Tip: rockefeller nyc manhattan statue art tourist |
