Travel Tip: Colombian coffee

2 stars
Published on Jun 27, 2008 by LucyHB for Colombia

This might surprise and disappoint a lot of people, but the coffee that is widely available in Colombia is not very good. Given the country's status as one of the largest exporters of coffee in the world that might sound ridiculous, but the truth appears to be that the majority of the good stuff is sent to the rest of the world, and the coffee that appears in cafes and on supermarket shelves in the country is somewhat below par. If you've a lot of money to spare, I'm sure you can find some really high grade stuff, but on my limited budget I was pretty unimpressed. One thing to remember is that, if you order white coffee, it will be pretty much all milk, heated, with a little bit of coffee stirred in. It's tasty (especially with sugar), but won't exactly give you a caffeine rush. If you want something stronger, be sure to ask for it black.
