The Antarctica Peninsula is known by many as the “tropical Antarctica”. This is because during summer time the temperatures go above zero Celsius quite often. Life is more abundant in this area as well – and thus one can see tourists around at times. The Peninsula also has one of the highest concentrations of scientific bases, distributed across many of its islands. Given the proximity to Tierra del Fuego it is also easy to supply this area of Antarctica. The radio gets finally full of foreign languages – as communications go back and forward, in contrast with essentially silent Antarctica. As you sail across the Peninsula, there are many islands with incredible shapes in the horizon. I was mostly between King George and Elephant Islands and the Antarctic Sound – but forgot already the names of the smaller ones filling the horizon now and then. I never actually heard Antarctica and "tropic" used in the same sentence. Learn something new every day. Thanks for the info!
