Punta Arenas was formally known as Magellanes – staying just in front of the Magellan Strait, which definitely dominates the city life. It is an important harbor especially for those adventuring further south into Antarctica. At the same time it is an excellent point to start voyages further north into Chilean Patagonia. Even today the area is scarcely populated. Visiting the beautiful and unique cemetery of Punta Arenas tells you about the highly diversified origins of emigrants that developed the region. The unique physiognomies you will find when walking in the streets still reveals this incredible mix of peoples. Hotel José Nogueira is one of the most beautiful classical buildings in the city – named after the Portuguese who owned a large part of Tierra del Fuego. The square with Magellan’s statue is also quite nice and centrally located. Tags for this Travel Tip: strait adventure physiognomies |
