Tombouctou (or Timbuktu as some American spell it) has an odd rule: if you are visiting, you MUST sleep in a hotel, leaving you with two of three options. When I was there, I chose the aptly-named Hotel Tombouctou because we were able to get a place for far less than I had expected. If you haggle and make like you’re about to walk out, they will offer you somewhere I thought was MUCH better than a mosquito-laden hotel room- the roof of a nearby building. Catch is you have to have thought ahead and brought a tent or sleeping bag and mosquito net. However, the view is amazing- from there you can hear the prayer call, see the spires of the ancient mud mosque and watch the sun set over the nearby dunes. Timbuktu itself isn’t all that super amazing; it’s mostly worth it to say you’ve been. So why not save a little cash along the way? Plus geting there is REALLY half the fun
