Warning: Do not eat fresh fruit at altitude. In particular, do not eat fresh fruit at altitude if recovering from a nasty stomach bug. Having been laid up in Samaipata with a horrible Bolivian bug that continued to haunt me months later, I'd been unable to hold onto any solids for a while and so was feeling a bit weak. When I started to feel better, I drank a couple of cups of fresh orange juice and ate some tangerines. Big mistake. The fruit must have started fermenting in my stomach because, just an hour or so later, I had the most bloated stomach imaginable, and was, in a most unfetching manner, subject to involuntary, violent burps that were accompanied by a retching sound and white frothy stuff. If it sounds unpleasant, it felt worse. And all the while I had the most painful stomach cramps you could imagine. This lasted the best part of 12 hours, and was extremely unpleasant both for myself and for my poor boyfriend, who had to witness his girlfriend apparently turning into something from the exorcist. Stick to dried fruit, nuts and chocolate for energy. I was certainly in no hurry to visit the fruit market again once I recovered!
