I'm normally always up for partaking of the national drink when I visit a country - cacahaca in Brazil, Pisco sours in Peru, dark rum in Colombia...but in Bolivia I found I had to give the national drink a miss after tasting it once. Singani, the country's most popular spirit, is very cheap and widely available, but unfortunately it tastes not unlike soap. Or soapy water. Yuck. I ordered it in a bar and, looking around for something to mix it with, thought that as it was a clear spirit it would go best with 7Up. The barmaid nodded approvingly and I since read that, apparently, Singani and 7Up is known as Chuflay and is considered the national cocktail of Bolivia. It was also, apparently 'invented' by an English man, but considering I had unwittingly 'invented' the self-same cocktail for the sole reason that the drink wouln't go well with anything else, the invention seems a little feeble to me! Still, try the drink by all means, but it's unlikely you'll get a taste for it. To me, it still tasted like soapy water, but now with added lemony fizz.
