When you arrive in La Paz you'll see various notices around the bus station warning of tricks and scams to beware of. Nobody wants to become paranoid, but it is important to bear these warnings in mind as problems have been reported by quite a few travellers in the city. My visit was luckily trouble-free, but there have been reports of criminals posing as plain clothes police officers, leading tourists away and then robbing them. Any official police officer would not be in plain clothes and would be carrying ID - if someone approaches you in this way, just walk quickly away. Be careful with cabs too - don't share cabs with strangers and use only official taxis, which will have a telefone number on the side. Less serious scams include the South American staple of having one person drop something on your clothes and a supposedly helpful passerby offering to clean it off, while their accomplice steals from you while you are distracted. Don't be paranoid, but do be careful.
