Travel Tip: Carnival!

4 stars
Published on Jul 2, 2008 by LucyHB for Santa Cruz

It's not quite up there with the legendary Rio carnival, but Santa Cruz's own version - held 15 days before Lent, is a pretty lively affair too. The whole city lets its collective hair down, and I found it easy to get swept up in the party mood as live music played, people danced in the streets, and locals got into the spirit of things with some quite elaborate and inventive fancy dress! The only problem with arriving here at this time of year is that prices for hotels and hostels can rise quite steeply - if you've got firm plans to be here then try to book as far in advance as possible to get the best deals. Leave it to the last minute and you might have problems finding even the most basic room at a reasonable rate.
