Travel Tip: Carnival in Barranquilla

4 stars
Published on Jul 2, 2008 by LucyHB for Barranquilla

Barranquilla tends not to be top of any tourist's 'must see' list for Colombia - being a hot, dusty, industrial town, but there's one time of year when visitors flock here from all over the country. Carnival in Barranquilla is said to be second only Rio de Janeiro in terms of size and scale, and it's taken incredibly seriously by the locals. Preparations for the fiesta begin months in advance, and hotels in the city are booked up equally far ahead. If you want to party here during carnival (dates change annually, but it's usually four days in late February/early March) then you'll need to plan ahead - don't expect to be able to just turn up. If all else fails, you could always book accommodation in either Santa Marta or Cartagena - the city is around an hour or so's bus ride from both - party here during the day and then head back on the last bus in the evening.
