For those who have spent a lot of time in Colombia, travellers' fears about being kidnapped seem a little far-fetched. However, it's quite understandable that, given the country's reputation as having one of the highest kidnapping rates in the world, first-time visitors want to know just how much they have to fear. Put simply, kidnapping is not a likely prospect for any casual visitor here - victims tend to be either high profile, wealthy or both, and a backpacker with hiking boots hanging from their scruffy rucksack is unlikely to be high on the list of kidnapping priorities! That said, kidnappings of tourists have occurred, albeit infrequently. Don't set off without a guide into any jungle regions - don't attempt to take the Lost City trek by yourself, for instance, and be alert as to any trouble hot spots and areas of guerrilla activity by keeping an eye on the news and talking with locals.
