| I visited Colombia at the end of a 10-month stint traveling around South America, and as would be expected, funds were ultra low. With a bargain 'house' in Taganga and no more travel necessary until my flight out of Cartagena six weeks later, I thought I'd be able to manage on my minimal budget. At this stage, even a couple of pounds here or there made a big difference to the quality of my life! It was a bit of a kick in the teeth then, to find that, on leaving Colombia, you're required to pay a departure tax, in cash, of around US$70. As that was more or less equal to my monthly rent, I wasn't best pleased to discover this and found myself in the shameful situation of having to call my parents and ask for the money to be put into my account. But although this was embarrassing, I was just grateful I found out about the departure tax in time - you won't be able to leave without paying it, so do check the exact amount (you can pay in Colombian currency or US dollars) and make sure you have the cash when you arrive at the airport. |
