Despite negative local stereotypes for Frankston, a town/outer suburb near Melbourne, I found the place to be quite nice. My friend and her family showed me a bit and I’m looking forward to experiencing more in the future. I especially liked the waterfront and beach area on Port Phillip Bay. The Landmark Bridge over the Kananook Creek is a nice spot for photographs in particular. If you have children, there’s a great kid-friendly park near the Visitors Center. A must for everyone is gelati from Sofia restaurant. Just get one serve, though, since it’s huge and is actually suitable for three or more people! Keep an eye out for interesting sea life while you walk on the small pier. There are sea stars galore. Frankston is easily reached from downtown Melbourne via train. Catch the Frankston line from Flinders Street Station. Sometimes there is construction or repairs and the like, so travelers may have to transfer to a bus and then hop on a train at a different station later, but there are usually signs and staff to direct people efficiently. Expect at least an hour’s ride, so bring something to read or sit near a window to see the different suburbs pass by, graffiti art (some good, some not-so-great), and glimpses of the ocean. If you have a car, you can spend some time in Frankston and then head further south to explore the Mornington Peninsula area. For more information, see http://www.frankston.vic.gov.au/ . Check the summer schedules for fun festivals like the Sea Festival and Sand Sculpting Australia. Tags for this Travel Tip: beach waterfront pier gelati park children |

I've never been to Frankston when I've been in the Melbourne area. Guess I'll have to make a trip there next time around. Wow, Sophia's looks incredible!
