The Proboscis monkeys with their distinct long noses can only be found in Borneo. We took a 3-hour monkey watching boat tour at dusk, when the monkeys were active and easy to spot. The boats took us into the mangroves and there we slowed down, so that we did not make much noise. We saw monkeys everywhere, but they were quite far and I was disappointed that in the dusk I could not see their long noses – for all I knew, they could be any other type of monkeys. But then, they were in their natural habitat, so I am not sure why I was expecting for them to come close to us. I was lucky to be able to observe these unique monkeys and I was stunned by the beauty of the mangroves, so different from the landscapes at home.
